Raul Sosa
Co-founder of Bespoke Childcare and a dad of three.
Before starting our childcare program, I worked as an Model Based Systems Engineer at Missions Systems in Northrop Grumman. While I loved my work, I also saw firsthand how demanding careers can take a toll on parents’ time, energy, and peace of mind.
As a parent myself, I know what it feels like to rush from work to pick up the kids on time, then still face the evening scramble of dinner, homework, and family time. That struggle inspired me to create a childcare program that goes beyond "babysitting", one that nurtures children and supports parents, because when family unit thrive, the children thrive too.
My mission is simple: to give families the kind of support that enhances their health and their career.
What inspired you to start a childcare business?
I have three children of my own. While looking for childcare, I noticed that for the price I was paying, I couldn’t justify the value I was getting back. I was pushed “between a rock and hard place”. I want more for my children and for my family. So, in order to provide the level of care that I want, I decided to start a business where I can engineer solutions to optimize the meeting our needs, and the same for the families we service.
Do you have any formal education or certifications related to childcare?
I have completed the Maryland mandated trainings and at home we have home-schooled our children following Montessori, Waldorf, and Unschooled methods. I plan to get certified under the Waldorf style Schools of teaching in the future. Regardless, I truly believe in letting children be children; between the ages of 0 and 8, I believe we should let children learn and grow intuitively, and let them grow as nature intended.
How many years of experience do you have in childcare or related fields?
As of this time writing this (2025), I have 12 years of experience being a father to my precious daughters and son.
What are your core values or philosophy when it comes to childcare?
A friend once asked me a philosophical question: “Do you lean more towards Nature or Nurture?”. My answer was, if we are specifically talking about early childhood, I lean heavily towards Nature; children at this stage grow optimally when learning through play. I truly believe that children need to grow up as unhindered as possible. Boxing them into modern expectations will hinder their natural and intuitive development. They need to be outside as much as possible, under the care of a like-minded and kind adults who fosters and encourages joy in them. I believe this is the most optimal way to empower a child's individual developmental pace. If the child is in a joyful state, they are in the most optimal state of growth.
Can you share a personal story or experience that highlights your commitment to childcare?
I grew up with the traditional school system. My environment was not a joyful one, rather a strict one. Furthermore, things are not like they were before. I think the schooling system is worse in some ways. Our society is creating lot of mental illnesses in our young, compared to previous generations. This is a fact. I don't want this trend to continue, and I don’t want our children to be victims societal expectations, specially at this young age. We, as adults, need to lead by example, to take responsibility to ensure that our own traumas do not get passed down to our young. I wish I could do more for more children, and I'll start with eight at a time.
Do you have any special skills or unique approaches to childcare that set you apart?
Introspective practices has led me to understand the differences between innate human natures and ingrained societal expectations. I understand the nature of joy, and this is what children should be allowed to be—boundless joy.
What do you enjoy most about working with children?
Their capacity for uninterrupted fun. Can you keep up with them? I can, because having fun is not a chore!
How do you ensure a safe and nurturing environment for the children in your care?
Besides following standard state guidelines, my engineering skills and experiences allow me to bring in technology that enhances safety and measure trends to predict future hazards.
What are your hobbies or interests outside of your childcare business?
I like to volleyball, martial arts, and the sciences.
